Preparing for College

congress2000legacy

AN INTRODUCTION

congress2000legacy is a scholarship program set up by the Zoroastrian Association of Houston The Seventh World Congress 2000 held in Houston, Texas, was co-hosted by The Zoroastrian Association of Houston (ZAH) and Federation of Zoroastrian Association of North America (FEZANA).  The success of Congress 2000 can be measured in many aspects; one being that it provided ZAH with a residual positive balance of funds.  The congress2000legacy Award was established as a result of the funds that ensued from the success of ZAH’s World Zoroastrian Congress 2000.  Each year, the congress2000legacy Award will recognize young Zoroastrian students from ZAH who are studying at or about to enter the University at all levels and who have achieved excellence in their scholastic studies, in extra-curricular activities and who have made substantial contribution to Zarathushti community affairs.  The Desai family generously contribute one award every year and that Legacy Award is named the CYRUS ROHINTON DESAI scholarship and is given to an eligible undergraduate Zoroastrian going to college for the FIRST YEAR, because all that Cyrus wanted was to attend a college, even if it was for a day, and sadly that was not to be since he lost his fight with cancer.

ALL ELIGIBLE STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR THESE AWARDS

 OUR VISION

The congress2000legacy funds are designated to be used to preserve the history of ZAH’s Congress 2000 and to recognize the academic achievers in our community. A start-up-team was formed to organize, preserve/grow and disburse these funds via the awards program. The congress2000legacy Awards are implemented and now our goal is to draw upon individuals, corporations, charitable institutions, trust funds, donors and past congress 2000 legacy awardees to contribute.  At congress2000legacy, we have identified that the way to attract additional funds for awards and loans is to offer the donors an opportunity to name the award after a loved one and/or their institutions.  Our future plans call for LOANS to be formulated and introduced as a criterion. These loans will be based on the earnings of the original fund’s activities and new donor infusions. The Legacy Committee is progressing this effort at a larger scale, to ensure this program sustains over years to come. Finally, a solution is being worked on to introduce a NEED based criteria award and may be considered on an individual basis. This again will be based as the cash income increases or with new donor designated funds.
